The living, floating islands of plant matter in this central Tasmanian lake were lost following the 1964 construction of a dam. The water quality deteriorated rapidly during drought in 2008. Over the last ten years, Hydro Tasmania scientist Carolyn Maxwell and international lakes expert Dr. Peter Tyler have helped guide the project to decommission the dam and restore the vegetation and hydrology of the Lagoon.
This film introduces their efforts and shows us some rare imagery of the pre-dam Lagoon of Islands. The original genesis of the islands were a mystery, but now that conditions are improving we may one day see them form again.
