Submission Guidelines
Thanks for your interest in writing for Tasmanian Geographic. These guidelines are here to make submitting easier — for you and for us.
What we publish
On a planet that has been extensively mapped, we believe there are still entire regions of thought, creativity, and understanding to be charted. We enjoy any content with an exploratory or educational slant — and it does not have to be about Tasmania.
Interviews, travelogues, project updates, trip reports, essays, and reviews are all welcome. We aren't a news journal, but we're interested in current affairs. Overall we prefer evergreen content — pieces that will still read well in the years to come.
Previously published material, including book excerpts, is fine. We ask for the right to post and share it on our website and in future marketing efforts, always with attribution.
Writing pieces
Our main content is articles combining 500–2000 words with at least ten photographs. A short list of interesting facts as a sidebar is a lovely addition.
Please spell-check your text, and consider running it past a trusted friend for a proof read. We may make minor corrections of spelling and grammar; we'll discuss any larger changes with you first.
Send text inline — pasted into an email. Bold and italic are fine. If you need richer formatting, send a .docx attachment.
Make sure quotes are accurate. Keep a list of references; you don't need to send it, but please have it on hand.
Images
Authors usually supply their own photographs (we can source images externally if needed, but the result is rarely as good).
- Format: large JPEGs or WEBPs, ideally 2000px on the long edge.
- Captions: include a one-line caption for every image, in a separate text file or in the body of the email. Name files descriptively —
mt-anne-summit-by-jane-doe.jpgis better thanIMG_2034.jpg. - Rights: please ensure you have permission to use each image from the copyright holder.
- No images embedded in
.docx— send them as separate files.
Submitting
Email everything to editor@tasmaniangeographic.com. We'll get back to you within a week or two.
Looking forward to reading your work.
